Thanks to RBOT.EBQ virus

OK the thing that amazes me is that this Virus targets Windows 2000 machines that don’t have firewalls protecting them and haven’t had the recent security patches from Microsoft (its only been 8 Days since they came out).

Now I know for a fact that all these big companies have firewalls. Can you guess how its got through……

All these big companies have laptop users.

All these users connect to the internet at home, outside of the safety and security of their office.

The unsuspecting user gets infected, comes into work, bring the virus with them (Trojan Horse Style). Connects to the Network, Boom the entire network is compromised.

Lessons to be learned.

1) Stop using old technology (i.e. Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP came out in Dec 2001) How come CNN/ABC etc cant afford new technology.

2) If you have to use old Technology at least use Windows Update and get the updates.

3) Each network device needs to be certified and checked for security issues *Before* its allowed to connect to the network.

4) Don’t put this on TV, it will just encourage people to “Top This” as this issue getting a lot of media attention. Now half the world knows how old and how insecure the technology is that you have been using.

Side Effects

RBOT.EBQ will be floating around the internet for years to come, much the same way that the Sasser virus is.

It will be waiting to attack any un-patched Windows 2000 machine not behind a firewall.

This is not a case of if, but a case of when.
