Digital Life Episode - 23 Friday, December 23rd, 2005

Is a downloadable tech tv show. Its hosted by Patrick Norton who was a TV host of G4TechTV.

Hybrids: they’re not just cars, but the future of hard disk drives. We explain why magnetic disks and flash memory chips are a winning combination, and what technologies are most likely to make it to your local Fry’s or CompUSA.

Addictive games: these free time-wasters are so hard to quit they should be illegal.

No free antivirus program is perfect, but we like AVG, Avast 4 , and AntiVir better than some more expensive programs. We recommend you only install one antivirus program, so choose wisely.

Do you really need Hi-Def DVDs for Hi-Def playback? Robert checks out the NeuNeo HVD2085 DVD player, to see if the upconverting player lives up to the hype.

Plus, everything on Hi-Def DVD players: upsampling vs. upscaling vs. upconverting, 3:2 pulldown, resolutions, low cost solutions, and more from our expert/co-host Robert Heron.

Viewer Question: Travis asks “What’s your take on the “HDTV” torrent downloads of TV shows?” Not the legality issue of course, but the quality issue.
Answer: HD is always compressed to get the file size down, and resolution reduction is usually part of that process–but they can still look pretty good. As far as the legality issue…

We analyze the latest technology news, from our tech-centric San Francisco studio.

And, as always, we take a swing at more of your latest viewer questions.

Dear Dell That Tie doesn’t Match the Shirt Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

Is it me or does a Silver computer and Black monitor look rubbish.

This kind of thing drives me insane.

For those playing catch up.

If your computer is beige your just not trendy
If your computer is black, well thats so last year
If your computer is silver, thats good because silver is the new black.

BUT DELL PLEASE TRY AND COLOUR CO-ORDINATE WILL YOU*

*Note to Michael Dell (check out www.apple.com) Silver/Black/White BUT NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

Today I have been playing with the Dell Optiplex GX520 and GX620 Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

I had a mixed bunch

1 x Optiplex GX620 Mini Tower(3.2Ghz)
Boots to a usable Windows XP Desktop in 35 Seconds
Intel P4 640 2mb Cache 800Mhz FSB

1 x Optiplex GX620 Small Form Factor (3.0Ghz)
Boots to a usable Windows XP Desktop in 47 Seconds
Intel P4 630 2mb Cache 800Mhz FSB

1 x Optiplex GX520 Desktop (2.8Ghz)
Boots to a usable Windows XP Desktop in 42 Seconds
Intel P4 521 1mb Cache 800Mhz FSB

1 x Optiplex GX520 Mini Tower (3.0Ghz)
Boots to a usable Windows XP Desktop in 49 Seconds
Intel P4 630 2mb Cache 800Mhz FSB

The build quality is very good. The side panels are metal not plastic.

I am looking for a new Quiet but fast machine, I currently use a Dell Dimension 8300 (3.0Ghz) for various media management jobs. This machine takes in comparison 1m 10s to boot to a usable windows desktop. So the noise and speed get on my nerves, the lack of PCI express is also another nail in its coffin.

So I have decided to replace it with the Optiplex GX620, thats both silent and basically the fastest computer I have ever used. I am not really sure why the 3.2Ghz machine is way, way faster than the brand new 3.0 Ghz machines, I need to check but I think its using SATA2, whatever its doing I like it.

I like the display on the front of the GX260

Speed isnt everything I run my entire operation on a 1.2Ghz Dell Latitude X300.
