Ozzie: The Saviour of Microsoft? Friday, April 21st, 2006

Ozzie can do what Gates no longer can - not only formulate strategy but also help implement it by working with the troops. People tell stories of the approachable Ozzie having long conversations with low-level programmers by the coffee machine about security strategies or other arcana.

Seagate 5g External Hard Disk Thursday, April 20th, 2006

I lost my 1gb USB thumb drive ( it’s so tiny). So I went looking for an alternative device. USB Flash drives are coming down in price/storage, but the Seagate Pocket Hard Disk beat them all on cost per Gigabyte.

The drive comes in 2gb, 5gb or 6gb. I am reviewing the 5gb model.

Summary
Host Powered, No additional Cables
Hot-pluggable USB 2.0 interface enables data transfer up to 480 Mbps.
3600-RPM drive with 2-Mbyte cache
Can be a Boot Drive, if your bios supports it.

Specs

Product Description: Seagate USB2.0 Pocket Hard Drive hard drive - 5 GB - Hi-Speed USB
Type: Hard drive - external
Dimensions (WxDxH): 7.3 cm x 7.3 cm x 1.9 cm
Weight: 63 g
Capacity: 5 GB
Interface Type: Hi-Speed USB
Connector: 4 pin USB
Spindle Speed: 3600 rpm
Buffer Size: 2 MB
OS Required: Apple MacOS 9.2.2 or later, Microsoft Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP

The drive is silent in operation.

It took 15 mins to copy 4.7gb worth of data. I tested it by copying a very large .VOB File. These are dvd files, I was curious if the drive would be fast enough to stream mpeg-2 video (It was).

All in all I am very pleased.

PS: I found my 1gb usb thumb drive, it was in my coat pocket. It was lost for 3 months, I found it within 4 hours of purchasing the seagate. Funny how life works.
