How the Internet killed TV (in my house anyway) Friday, September 29th, 2006

I only have about 5 or 6 hours a week free to watch TV.

It occurred to me that what I watched was available legally on the internet.

The good old BBC are pretty good at getting all their shows I like available online.

Watching daily news was perhaps the first thing to move over to the Web

I also watch various tech tv programming.

Windows Vista Screen Recorder Thursday, September 28th, 2006

I spent an hour trying to get a working video based screen recorder working on Windows Vista.

I know Camtasia works I have seen other screencasts using it, but both the install and 30 day free trial failed to work on Windows Vista Build 5728

I also tried my trusty My Screen Recorder Pro, but the video it made was a bit psychedelic to say the least.

So I had my first bit of trouble in Vista with uninstalling Camtasia, in fact I lost the fight to uninstall it and its still embedded. Oh the joy of being on the bleeding edge.

Retrospectively taking a System Restore prior to installing would have been a better plan that just hoping it worked.

iTunes 7.01 is out Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

This seems to fix most “early adopters” problems with 7.0

I am still loving cover flow, This allows you to browse music by the cover art.

Microsoft Patch VML Flaw Early Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

This usually means its being exploited in the wild, so it might be an idea to update your machine.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB925486)
A security issue has been identified in the way Vector Markup Language (VML) is handled that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Windows and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Windows Vista Experience Index on the Dell XPS M1210 Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

This is the tool that tells you how your computers performance is rated by Windows Vista

These results are using Beta Drivers on Windows Vista RC1 Build 5728

Machine: Dell XPS M1210 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo
100gb 7200 RPM Hard Disk
2.0 Gig Ram (533Mhz)
Nvidia GeForce Go 7400

Component: Subscore out of 5 (Higher is better)

Processor: Subscore 4.9
Ram: Subscore 4.5
Graphics: Subscore 3.1
Gaming Graphics: Subscore 3.4
Primary Hard Disk Subscore 5.0

Base Score 3.1 (Determined by Lowest Subscore)

The Windows Vista RC1 (Build 5600) the Graphics: Subscore was 2.5. So some improvements have been made in the 25 days since the builds shipped.

My Notes
Although the Nvidia 7400 video card is pretty amazing by 2006 standards in a small form factor laptop its also the weakest link in the chain. I have fast CPU and Hard Disk the bottleneck has to settle somewhere.

I am very pleased with how Vista is performing, but I would not be in a hurry to install it on anything other that the fastest hardware I have access to.

So my other Windows XP machines are all staying on XP.

The Dell XPS M1210 is a great little computer.
