The install checks your version of windows is genuine at both the download and install stages.

The install takes about 3-5 minutes to complete and requires a reboot.

I do recommend that if you use IE6 or earlier and your computer is running Windows XP to upgrade.

Note: If your computer is likely to be infected with viruses or spyware IE7 is not the cure, install IE7 on a clean/working machine.
A failed IE7 install will just make things worse.

If you do install it and don’t like it then you can always uninstall back to IE6.
