Problems with IE7 Friday, October 20th, 2006

Well in advance of the Automatic Update Notification that my users will be seeing on Nov1st I had few users at my clients install and test against IE7.

There are a couple of machines that failed to install properly. They have rolled back to IE6, but this just backs up my concerns that on Nov1st there will be some causalities

Tips for installing

Disable Your Anti virus until after the install reboot.
Uninstall any existing browser plug ins like Google desktop, Google tool bar in fact any IE add-on

At the moment I would feel a lot better if this upgrade was not being notified to my client using Automatic Updates.

I predict a few IE7 killed my PC news stories.

HP computer sales ‘overtake Dell’ Friday, October 20th, 2006

HP had 16.3% of the global market in the third quarter of 2006, compared with rival Dell’s 16.1%, Gartner said.

Very interesting. In this country you can buy HP from retail stores like Comet/Currys or online retailers like Dabs.com and finally from computer dealers.

With Dell you can only purchase Direct. If Dell were to get more into retail that would assure their place as the market leader.

In America Dell are experimenting with their own retail stores. Like Apple do. But one store at a time is not going to be enough.

It will be interesting to see who is market leader nine months from now. I say Dell, as lots of business people are waiting on the new Versions of Windows/Office before replacing older computers in the fleet.

Basically if your running a Windows 2000 PC, you are the candidate most likely to be using Window Vista in 2007
