Dell Latitude D620 with Windows Vista / Office 2007 Pro Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

This is my first Dell Supplied Windows Vista Business / Microsoft Office 2007 Pro Pre-installed Laptop.

I use Vista and Office 2007 myself but I installed them from my Microsoft supplied Media.

I install at least 100-150 computers per year so for me its back to the drawing board figuring out the best way to pre-install the pre-installed equipment.

In Windows XP, it’s about a 15 Step Process. For Vista it’s going to be different.

Anyway here is a quick rundown of an “out of the box” experience.

First you select the Region and Keyboard Layout.

Then Select a Computer Name and give it a Username and Password.

The time taken from first switch on to being delivered to the Windows desktop is about 3 or 4 minutes. Which is faster than XP.

Next up entering in your Office 2007 Product key. Note to Dell: The Product Keys “B” and “8″ look very similar it took me a couple of goes to notice my mistake

Enter in your Office 2007 Product Key

Next up is a quick look at the Windows Experience Index (I was just curious)

This machine scored as expected and is perfectly suitable for an Office worker.

Windows Experience Index

By selecting the default Windows security update settings it goes off in the background and downloads the latest updates (12 in total) if this was an Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine it would download circa 56 security updates and take the best part of half an hour doing it.

Windows Update Results (Dated 13/03/2007)

This machine shipped with Windows Vista Business and Office 2007 Pro pre-installed.

I was surprised to see SQL Server 2005 on the list of pre-installed applications and check out the catchy titled “Microsoft Office 2007 Primary Interop Assemblies”

Pre-Installed Applications

Games are optional but not installed by default under Windows Vista Business. Adding games took about 3 minutes and lots of hard disk thrashing. Why so long?

And finally a look at the default desktop.

User Desktop.

Overall it’s much smoother and quicker than pre-installing a Windows XP Machine. So for a job I do many times a year any improvements are welcome.

Note about the Dell Latitide D620: The D620 is our standard issue laptop recomendation for business people.
