Canon EOS 350D and Windows Vista

According to Canon’s website the Canon EOS 350D is supported in Windows Vista.
See Canon’s Compatibility List here
http://www.canon-europe.com/vista/en/compatibility_table/dslr.asp
In the download section of Canon’s Website there is Windows Vista Specific Download for the EOS 350D the package is called ZoomBrowser EX Updater (EN) (5.8a)
However connecting the device Via USB the Camera is found by Windows Vista (it is correctly identified in the Control Panel > Scanners and Camera’s but Canon’s Software can’t find the device “No Device found”.
I did some research into this and most other people have given up and are using USB memory card readers.
If you found this post and have the Canon EOS 350D and Windows Vista working together then let me know about it by leaving a comment or e-mailing me.

I have successfully imported pictures from the EOS 350D to Windows Vista x64. I simply changed the communication protocol in the menu to PTP/Print instead of “PC Connection”
I’m not sure if RAW pictures will work didn’t try that yet

@ Ariel: thanks for the great input, it works perfectly (with RAW picture too)

Thanks!
The Canon import uitility won’t detect it still (vista x64). But it works great with Windows picture import.

Excellent advice guys. I’ve been trying to get my EOS350D connected to vista at home for a while. I was relying on my work pc running XP to get the photos off the camera. Having upgraded that to Vista yesterday I was a little stuck.
You wouldn’t have thought that to connect it to a pc, you need to change communications protocol to something other than “PC Connection”

can you please describe to me how to change the communication protocol? or at least where to look for it. thank you for your help

Hi
It’s a setting you change on the camera and not something you do on the computer. I dont have one of these or I would point you to the correct screen you need to go to.

Thank you for your reply - found it and it worked like a charm! Thanks again!

Funniest thing… I was looking for some patent filing with my name and google returned this page. I totally forgot I even posted this tip but it made me utterly happy to see it help you guys. I actually tried this because a previous camera I had supported only this mode in windows and it was mentioned in the manual so I knew that it’s more fail safe than the regular protocol and lacks some features. But buttom line you get the pics on the PC and that’s what matters…
Cheers,
Ariel.

Well thats intriguing.
I’ve been having problems with my EOS 350D being not identified on my new Vista based laptop so I went looking and found this site. You’ve given me the answer but the other way around!
My camera works when set for PC connection but does not work for Print/PTP. I get a Camera Window error message to the effect of “Cannot detect camera”. Change the setting back to PC Connection and it works like a dream.
Perhaps Vista or the Canon driver have been recently updated.
Whatever, thanks for the clue that got me going.
Cheers

Wish I had seen this before I just spent an hour getting to the same conclusion! Even with PTP, for some reason Camera Window would not launch on Vista but I changed the preferred download program to Picasa (although I guess most any would work) and that works fine. Slightly different user experience but the transfer works and takes about the same time. Looking at the Canon site it seems the basic issue is that the EOS350D is just not compatible with Vista 64 unless using PTP.

Thanks very much for this - just saved my Sunday:)
I am using Adobe Photodownloader for this. Is it right that the images from the EOS are jpg? Is it possible to download RAW or other file types ?
Thanks

Thank you so much!!!
Almost messed up my new computer, uninstalling, reinstalling programs and drivers and deleting files to find the problem.
Very simple solution that works.

Excellent advice - I’d never have figured that out in a hundred years. (For those with a 350D, go to settings menu 2, and change “Communication”.)
How poor of Microsoft not to make Vista directly compatible with the world’s best-selling DSLR though.

Many thanks for stopping me tearing my hair out! Spent about two hour installing, uninstalling and reinstalling the Canon software. Like Yaffle said you would not have thought of that as an option. Why is that advice not on the Canon website? Now busy downloading photos into the Windows photo gallery. Brilliant solution!

Yes! Worked for me. Thanks so much for the tip.

Wouldn’t have thought of that either
Long live XP!

I too can’t believe that so many people are experiencing this problem but nothing is mentioned on the Canon website. Thank god I found this forum. I like Peter Wilson found that Ariel Laub’s advice was right but in reverse. My camera wouldn’t connect because it was set to PTP/Print, but when changed to PC connection worked just like it did on XP.

I cursed for an entire week while trying to download the canon software which seemed to say it was compatible with Vista - however, after installing and uninstalling the software from canon usa and canon europe many a times - there was no luck!! But thanks to Ariel’s suggestion there light at the end of the tunnel! I use the 350 D and the PTP/Print option it worked for me as well! Thanks a bunch!

I’ve changed the communication setting to PTP/Print option and am able to download photos ok, but when connected to my computer’s USB port my camera constantly flashes a “BUSY” signal and no functions work. When the communication setting is set to PC the BUSY problem is solved but then windows can’t detect the camera. I need to be able to have the camera connected to the computer and take a picture and then immediately download so I can check the result of the photo taken on a computer screen. Does anyone have any idea why the BUSY signal is being shown any time the camera is connected to the computer? I suppose I could remove the USB cable while taking each picture and then insert it to download each picture and so on but that seems a bit ridiculous. No such problem when using XP.
