Many thanks for stopping me tearing my hair out! Spent about two hour installing, uninstalling and reinstalling the Canon software. Like Yaffle said you would not have thought of that as an option. Why is that advice not on the Canon website? Now busy downloading photos into the Windows photo gallery. Brilliant solution!

Excellent advice - I'd never have figured that out in a hundred years. (For those with a 350D, go to settings menu 2, and change "Communication".)

How poor of Microsoft not to make Vista directly compatible with the world's best-selling DSLR though.

Thank you so much!!!

Almost messed up my new computer, uninstalling, reinstalling programs and drivers and deleting files to find the problem.

Very simple solution that works.

Thanks very much for this - just saved my Sunday:)
I am using Adobe Photodownloader for this. Is it right that the images from the EOS are jpg? Is it possible to download RAW or other file types ?
Thanks

Wish I had seen this before I just spent an hour getting to the same conclusion! Even with PTP, for some reason Camera Window would not launch on Vista but I changed the preferred download program to Picasa (although I guess most any would work) and that works fine. Slightly different user experience but the transfer works and takes about the same time. Looking at the Canon site it seems the basic issue is that the EOS350D is just not compatible with Vista 64 unless using PTP.
