Real world Windows Vista Reliability and Performance Statistics Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

I have been using Windows Vista for about 75 Days business days now.

Windows Vista has some new Reliability and Performance Statistics tools that allow you to track problems which affect windows or installed software.

So the breakdown looks like this.

Instances of Applications that Stopped Working:40

iTunes (12)
iexplore.exe (10)
DWM.EXE (5)
nvcplui.exe (4)
OUTLOOK.EXE (4)
Camtasia (2)
wincal.exe (2)
Explorer.EXE (1)

Instances of Applications that Stopped Responding: 26

Explorer.EXE (14)
iTunes (7)
Excel (4)
tvprunner.exe (1)

Total Instances: 66

Notes:

I am a power user and go out of my way to stress the system in an effort to simulate how my clients are going to use it. But to be clear this is real world use. I run my business on Windows Vista.

If you take iTunes out of the Mix things look better. However being honest overall stability remains a concern.

The good news is NO data was ever lost during these glitches.

I explain to my clients who need new machines “Windows Vista is good but be prepared for some inconvenience” and the data above backs that up. Windows XP is still a option all the way through to the end of this year from OEM’s Like Dell.

For this reasons I think my call for Microsoft to extend Express Upgrades from OEM’s is a valid one. You can read that post on the link below.
