Can a dying cmos battery cause the time to change on the fly? Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Just curious, It’s a four year old Dell Optiplex GX260 running Windows XP.

It keeps losing time: Example the clock will go back a couple of hours while the computer is still switched on.

I have ruled out any software/malware/spyware/network or windows time service.

There is no indication the cmos battery is depleted or errors on POST but based on its age the battery could be near the end of its life.

Does anyone know if a low cmos battery can cause this to happen?

If you know leave a message in the comments.

Thanks

Colin
