Dell Optiplex GX745 Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) Friday, May 18th, 2007

In this day and age I don’t know why all office PC’s don’t look like this?

If you need expansion or super cooling for your gaming computer yes I can see why a full size form factor would be necessary.

But your typical office user should be using something this small and compact in the office. Why?

Desk Space
Noise (it’s very quiet)
Easy to move or relocate

My desktop PC is a Precision 390 which is huge in comparison.
I love my Precision 390 but with a USFF it could live on my desktop not under it.

Screencast: Example of Bad User Interface Web Design Thursday, May 17th, 2007

In this screencast I highlight the issue of bad user interface web design.

Why for example can I get to a Printer Driver Download within 5 mouse clicks on HP.com but it takes 9 mouse clicks and 7 web pages on brother.co.uk

I have seen people have issues navigating around this site, so I know its a complex issue to get right, so I dont mean to beat up on brother or anything but if hp.com can do it why can’t brother.

This screencast runs for 2m13s

Click the Screencast to Play.

This screencast requires the Flash plug in. You can get it here

Comparing the Docking of a Dell XPS M1210 and Latitude D420 Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Dell XPS M1210 12.1″ Laptop

As you can see the M1210 has a total of 6 cables that need to be connected/disconnected as and when the laptop is moved.

These are:

2 x USB
1 x VGA
1 x Power
1 x Network
1 x 3.5m Audio Out.

Dell Latitude D420 12.1″ Laptop Docked

A D420 docked still has cables but the “cable hell” is significantly reduced. To dock a D420 you just place the laptop on the Docking station. All the cables are already connected to the port replicator in the dock. So you just Dock on / Dock Off. On the M1210 I have to do major heart surgery.

Image Resizer for Windows Vista Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

The Windows XP Power Toy Image Resizer was my favorite all time utility. Sadly Image Resizer is not supported in Windows Vista.

This easily let you resize images to a particular resolution.

You can check out my Windows XP Image Resizer Screencast here.

screencast-how-to-resize-images-easily-on-windows-xp

However I live in a Windows Vista world and I need a replacement.

I looked at a couple of 3rd party applications and have decided that Google’s Picasa does what I need and the added image manipulation features are really helpful.

To resize an image in Picasa:-

1) Highlight the image.
2) Choose File > Export Picture to Folder.

Then you will see this box

Change the resolution example: 640, 800, 1024 or whatever you need.

Microsoft: 0
Google: 1

Link: http://picasa.google.com/

I will do a Picasa Screencast at some point.

1 in 10 webpages contain malicious code capability Monday, May 14th, 2007

What a massive problem this is going to be in the future.

In most cases nearly all companies now have Anti-Virus solutions and Spam solutions, the new frontier is to compromise the computers via the websites visited by non-tech savvy users. I can pretty much guarantee this issue will impact on you at some point.

I would like to point out some historical perspective here. Let’s take Spam e-mail as an example:-It started out being an annoyance and now chances are you get more spam e-mail than legitimate e-mail. The same thing is going to happen with malicious Websites.

One in 10 web pages scrutinised by search giant Google contained malicious code that could infect a user’s PC.
Researchers from the firm surveyed billions of sites, subjecting 4.5 million pages to “in-depth analysis”.

About 450,000 were capable of launching so-called “drive-by downloads”, sites that install malicious code, such as spyware, without a user’s knowledge.

A further 700,000 pages were thought to contain code that could compromise a user’s computer, the team report.
