Bad Microsoft why Downloads in the .img format

I just looked up the Trial Version of Microsoft Project 2007 for a client.

Microsoft offer a nice lenghty 180 day Trial version. All looking good so far.

Now the download for the Trial is in the .img format, so that means I have to burn it onto a CD first, then install it.

Now I can understand why you would want to do that with a beta of an operating Systems like Windows Server 2008 but a deskptop application that is only a 192mb download it just seems like on extra step that’s not really needed and not good for the enviroment either. Another CD coaster.

Ok so burning an image to CD should be easy for a guy like me, Well my version of Nero Burning Rom, does not support the .img format. A quick google and all I had to do was rename the .img file to .nrg and burn the file.

Anyway back on topic, why do I need to burn the image at all, let me just run the installer.

Update: Anyway I just tried to install the Trial from my CD-r and get this message.

So to recap.

1) 192mb Download
2) Copy the .img file to a machine with a CD Burner
3) Rename the .img to .nrg so Nero will burn it.
4) Burn a CD
5) Install - Failed

I think I know why the trial period is 180 days, as I am worried this is how long its going to take to get it installed.

Ok, so at this point I am doing my own Technical Support.

Was the download corrupt?
Do I need to update my CD burning software?

Final Update (I promise)

I updated my Nero burning software and burned the image at a slower speed and the installation now works.

I would dearly love to know why this download was in the .img format in the first place.

Lets look at the different file formats Microsoft uses for large files.

Office2007 Trial = .exe
Windows Vista Beta’s and Windows 2008 Server Beta’s = .iso
Microsoft Project = .img

Microsoft Pick a download format, any format.

I sometimes get a chuckle when I see things in .PDF format in Microsoft Download RSS Feed.
