Wanted: Opinions of the VYE 7" Mini Laptops
If you have one of the 2007 VYE’s please drop a note in the comments.
I want to know from a real user how practical a 7″ Laptop can be and what kind of things this device is good for.
I am looking for a niche product to push and the VYE’s are on my shortlist.

My daughter has just purchased the Vye (512Mb ram Win Xp Home version for using at Uni.. Found it slow so upgraded the ram to 1Gb but still seems slow loading web pages. IGb + XP should be reasonably fast but guess the 500Mhz processor is the problem. As there is only one sodimm slot then it means disposing of the supplied 512 stick and replacing it with 1Gb (about £50). Still good value from dabs.com and with an external monitor and wireless mouse and usb keyboard its ok for desktop work. On the whole it is a compromise between carrying a heavy laptop around and the convenience of a small pc with full keyboard that is better than a pda. Only had it a few weeks so time will tell on its usability

Thank you very much Howard.
Reading that the Windows Vista models should be avoided, if XP is slow, Vista must be terrible.
How suitable is the device as a portable media player for Video specifically?
I have a concern that the device would get too hot playing back a couple of hours worth of Video.

No its not hot as it uses a low power AMD processor. With 1Gb mem its great playing music/vids and the 80Gb HDD is ample for most things. One has to take into consideration the price. For its size its great - you only have to check out the price of similar size Sony Vaio, they are over £1k for a small laptop. particularly for students who have to carry lots of books, the Vye is ideal, wireless, full keyboard, decent HDD,lightweight, will run Office XP no prob. What more can you expect for sub £500. Feel free to ask for any more info

Thanks for the information Howard.
Good news on the heat, I watched a DVD movie on my laptop the other day and I almost got 3rd degree burns it was so hot.
I see that resolution of the screen is 800×480, and DVD’s standard resolution is 720×480 so it should display the image without compromise.
Naturally the Mpeg2 files would have to be on the hard disk or accessed over a network connection.
It sounds like it might make a decent Apple/iTunes Jukebox and a portable media player and if it can keep me out of Accident and Emergency all the better.

I dont know if you ever purchased one of these after all but my daughter is now selling hers after only buying it in Sept, not because it is in any way inadequate but because she is moving on to PhD studies and doesn’t need the portability as we have a fast desktop and other laptops. If you or anyone is interested please email me
