Making Sense of the Google Phone Announcement Monday, November 5th, 2007
Will my next Phone run an open source Operating System?
Google have announced their intention to deliver a mini mobile phone Operating System. Initially they are partnering with Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG.
In the market today we have Symbian, Windows Mobile and Apples iPhone Operating Systems amongst others.
The benefits to the consumer should mean lower cost and tighter integration with existing Google applications like Gmail (e-mail) and Google Maps. The platform is likely to be Ad-Supported.
So why is Google doing this? Well they *Need* to make sure they have priority access to your digital future.
I have been a user of mobile Internet for about 5 years but with the advent of the sexy iPhone the portable web is going to be common place with non I.T. Consumers and take off in a big way.
If you are still laboring under the delusion that Google were a search company think again. Its all about Advertising and in particular in the mobile market its all about location based services.
It will be interesting how this all pans out. We have Apple to thank for spanking Microsoft on the Mobile OS front. However today’s announcement is slightly less impressive, its more of a “hey look we have a low cost Linux phone”.
