What does the iPhone having ActiveSync really mean Tuesday, March 11th, 2008
When this was announced the other day it was drowned out by other tech news from Mix08 and South by South West conferences.
Apple released an SDK for developers. So people can create applications for the iPhone.
They also announced they are licensing Microsoft’s ActiveSync technology. One of the reasons you don’t see many business users with iPhone’s is its not currently compatible with the most popular business e-mail system. Microsoft Exchange.
ActiveSync is the Microsoft technology that allows that to happen.
It makes you wonder if the iPhone is Apple’s Trojan Horse. Sure they don’t sell many PC’s or Laptops to enterprise customers but with Microsoft Exchange Support on the iPhone once again they have a clear path to a new user base.
The other hardware vendors must be really on edge now. The main differential was:-
iPhone = Consumer
Windows Mobile / Blackberry = Business User.
Now its a level playing field.
At this rate the iPhone 2.0 with 3g Support and better battery life is going to be really hard to ignore (for those with deep pockets).
The future of Internet Search is location based. So the real winners here are Apple and Google.
Once again Google are in a Win/Win situation, they have iPhone users for search and they will offer Google Android for those who remain on the Windows Mobile platform.
The battle for Mobile Location based search services is almost over before it has begun. No wonder Microsoft want to buy Yahoo and get an injection of new blood, new ideas.
