Dell are to shed up to 8800 jobs in a significant cost cutting exercise Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

It seems they want to reduce their operating costs by $3bn by 2011 as reported in a news story from the IDG News Service (link below).

“The company will seek savings in all areas, from design, manufacturing, logistics, materials and operating expenses.”

Sad news and my thoughts go out to any Dell employees who may be affected by this.

On a more positive note from Dell they have announced the successor to the D-series, the imaginatively entitled E-Series laptop range.

A laptop from the D-Series range would be a typical recommendation from me so I look forward to the E-Series. I have seen some of the leaked pictures and they look pretty nice.

Microsoft Access 2007 Runtime has been released and its free Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

runtime

The Access 2007 runtime allows you to deploy a database application designed in Access 2007  to people without Access 2007 on their computer.

In the old days you had to purchase the Microsoft Office Developer edition for access to this.

This is now free (see link below).

I am an Access developer and I will be honest I have only ported my own internal invoicing database over to Access 2007. I just cant get on with the new UI.

That issue aside the free Access 2007 Runtime is bonus for developers.
