Case Study: Recovering from a Server Disaster Part 2
I recently had to deploy a replacement Windows 2000 Terminal Server as part of a disaster recovery plan.
The customer’s server was a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC. The motherboard was gone and I could only mount the faulty server’s hard disk in another server to read/recover the most recent data.
When I tried to boot from the original hard disk in another server (Dell PowerEdge 1400SC) Windows 2000 failed to load had a blue screen on me.
This was not entirely unexpected.
In the time frame I have available to fix this problem I have no choice but to rebuild and deploy my own server to get the customer back online.
So the client is now running on my loan server, which is great for them but not ideal, the operating system license and hardware belong to me.
After looking at all the variables we elected to buy an after market PowerEdge 1600SC and put the original hard disk back in it.
I chose a machine that was very close to the specification of the PowerEdge 1600SC that died.
I just connected the hard disk and it all came back to life. All this without any hardware reconfiguration.
The customers is now back up and running with their own technology.
