Windows XP SP3 now available from Windows Update Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Microsoft have made this available as a high-priority download from www.windowsupdate.com

At the time of writing it is not available as a direct download. I assume that will follow later today or in the next few days.

It is offered as a single 66.9mb download and installs just like any other Windows Update. You have to agree to the license agreement then when the SP3 Installer starts you are offered a backup of your current files. You should do this.

I installed this on my Main Windows XP Pro desktop machine and the total install took about 40 minutes to complete successfully.

I would hold off for a few days to wait and see if there are any XP SP3 horror stories.

Possibly the first ever cool Windows Smart Phone Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Yesterday HTC announced the HTC Touch Diamond their latest phone.

I have an original HTC Touch so I guess I am their target market for this new model.

With phones these days its all about the user experience, so Leigh from www.coolsmartphone.com has uploaded a hands on clip. See below

It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 not that you can tell from the user interface. It seems HTC has done their best to hide it (not a bad thing). Notice the Internet Browser in the clip is Opera not IE.

In summary it now offers a user experience that comes near to that of the iPhone but is a true Windows Mobile phone. Something the iPhone will never be.

The one thing that amazes me about the Windows Mobile OEM’s is how long it took them to start innovating on their own platform. Perhaps innovating is the wrong word, copying  Apple would be a better description.

What Apple does next in the revision of their hardware (next month) will be interesting.
