Microsoft Announce Small Business Server 2008 Pricing Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

The replacement for Small Business Server 2003 is Windows Small Business Server 2008 and Microsoft have just published the pricing.

A fairly common implementation would be the standard edition (Windows + Exchange).

So lets look at the cost compared to the 2003 version

Windows Small Business 2003 Standard with 5 Clients Licenses ($599)

Windows Small Business 2008 Standard with 5 Clients Licenses ($1099)

So the base cost of the product is 45% more expensive.

They have adjusted the additional cost of the client access licenses from $90 to $77 to sweeten the deal.

If you have enough users then eventually the cost increase balances out. However for the Small Business (less than 10 users) that base cost increase is difficult to swallow.

The premium pricing has also been increased dramatically from $1,499 to $1,899 and price-per-CAL increase from $90 to $189) but is easier to understand. They give you another Windows Server License and SQL Server. So yes that means you need to run it on another Server (another additional expense).

This product is due for release in Q3 2008.
