Dell Launch their Studio Range 15 and 17 inch laptops Thursday, June 26th, 2008

With Dell it can be hard to keep up with their branding and positioning.

Their current portfolio consists of:-

Inspiron/Vostro/XPS/Latitude/Optiplex/Precision etc

Today they add Studio a laptop range.

The good news is Studio laptops appears to be targeted at the middle ground. I am not a fan when Dell try to do things on the cheap (Vostro).

Studio laptops come in 15″ and 17″ form factors.

If had to guess who these were aimed at I would say people who want performance but get put off by the XPS gaming brand.

The specifications look decent and the aesthetics are all in place.

The video card seems seems the obvious departure from the Nvidia based XPS range. The Studio laptops ship with an ATI 256mb Mobility Radeon HD 3450.

Nod32 False Positives are annoying Thursday, June 26th, 2008

falsepositive

Yesterday afternoon about 3pm a number of clients all had Anti-Virus threat detected messages (pictured above).

Some rogue definition updates falsely identified some word documents as being infected with the msword.smtag trojan.

As the first call came in I took it on face value and remotely took over the users PC.

I couldn’t find anything obvious so I quickly installed the SysInternals Process Monitor (Link) to have a good rummage around. Still nothing.

I quarantined the files and submitted them for further investigation with Eset.

Then about 10 minutes later another call comes in from another site with the same problem.

My first thought is false positive, so I quickly call Eset technical support in the UK on 0845 838 0832 and quickly get confirmation of the false positive.

Updated anti-virus definitions would be available shortly so we just had to wait it out.

Install and Review of the Dell Blue Tooth Stereo Headphones BH-200 Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I am loving the Dell XPS M1530 and it came with some Blue Tooth Stereo Headphones.

You charge these with the the supplied mini USB cable. Just plug it into an available USB socket.

Installation

To connect these to a blue tooth enabled PC you just hold and press the Play button on the Right earpiece and wait until you see a blue light flash constantly.

This puts the headphones in discovery mode.

Then on your other device you can browse for available devices, the default passkey is 0000 so within seconds you are connected.

There is a specific audio tab in the blue tooth software that you have to visit and  press connect on before audio is passed to the headphones.

They are comfortable to wear but look pretty geeky.

I tested the audio playback of Mp3, DVD and HD audio streams. All played back fine.

I also connected these to my HTC Touch and  that worked without a hitch.

Other features

Has an inbuilt Microphone so can be used with a mobile or Skype.

Specs

Specifications:

Compatibility: Bluetooth Ver. 1.1, 1.2 or 2.0 devices
