Understanding Mobile data charges while abroad Monday, July 7th, 2008
How this
Can get you this
Some recent shock headlines about UK users of mobile Internet.
Well I say UK users but in both cases these people used their Mobile Internet abroad to download large video files.
Tech Tip: Most mobile data plans are based on the amount of data you use and not the amount of time you are connected. Downloading video over a mobile capped service is a bad idea even if you are UK based. Use WIFI instead.
Tech Tech: As with all things mobile once you move abroad you really need to pay attention to the mobile operators roaming tariffs. It often allows them to charge you to receive texts, voice calls and consume data at additional costs.
Even if you are careful once your computer is connected to the Internet it gets up to all kinds of shenanigans downloading stuff you don’t even register like:-
Anti-Virus Updates
Instant Messaging Login/Presence information
Windows Update
Tech Tip: If your computer is set to download automatic updates, turn this off while you travel. You don’t really want a bill for that Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 chunky download.
So be careful, in both the cases mentioned above the users have managed to dodge the big bill but at some point someone is going to be made an example of.
