Performance Computing Dell XPS M1210 Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

I was so impressed with the performance of intel’s mobile Core Duo cpu I decided my next computer would be a real performance horse so I would need to look at the other potential bottlenecks in a system.

So what changes did I make sure my new machine provides stunning performance?

I bought the same Model the Dell XPS M1210 a few months prior so I am comparing it to that.

CPU
2.0GHZ Core Duo 2mb Cache / 2.0GHZ Core 2 Duo 4mb Cache

RAM
1gig of Ram / 2gig of Ram

Hard Disk
100gb 5400 RPM Hard Disk / 100gb 7200 RPM Hard Disk

These 3 things will ensure I am the bottleneck not the laptop.

In addition The Antivirus running on this machine will be NOD32 (from www.eset.co.uk), it doesn’t suck up your resources like a Norton Antivirus.

I have ordered a Dell XPS M1210 Core Duo 2 Monday, September 11th, 2006

I had a 2.0Ghz Core Duo M1210 but loaned that out to a client until Windows Vista Ships. I wont be seeing that again until Feb 2007.

I have been waiting for the Core Duo 2 Version of the M1210 before getting a replacement for myself.

The 2 month wait has been painful.

Dell to Launch Intel Core 2 Duo Any Day Now Monday, August 14th, 2006

Its not for sale yet but some catalogue blurb was found on their site.

I am looking forward to this chip. I have loaned out my Core Duo machine to client until Feb07 so i have been waiting for this to be announced.

I am currently using a Dell Latitude D620 Core Solo 1.6Mhz and there is a BIG difference in performance compared to a 2.0ghz Core Duo, and the Core Duo 2 will be about 20% faster than the Core Duo at the same speed. So its all good.

Two Weeks with the Dell XPs M1210 Friday, July 21st, 2006

I have been using the Dell XPS M1210 for two weeks as my everyday computer.

So from early morning to late night it’s on and working.

To date there is only one issue and that is heat. In the UK we have had a very hot week. The M1210 also kicks out a fair bit of heat.

It’s almost to the point you can’t use it on your lap (due to heat). I have written this off as being the price you pay for performance.

Outside of that issue, it’s the best laptop I’ve ever had. I joke about waiting for winter so the heat thing will be welcome thing.
